The mysterious Putorana Plateau appeared 252 million years ago, when there were no dinosaurs yet. It was formed by basaltic lava erupted by a huge supervolcano. Now the plateau occupies 250,000 km² — the size of three Austrias. Putorana was discovered in 1844, but due to inaccessibility and harsh weather, the plateau is still poorly studied. Usually no more than 2,000 people visit this unexplored land per year — about the same number of tourists come to the Baikal island of Olkhon in 4 days.
The relief of the plateau consists of deep canyons and mountains without peaks; scientists have discovered similar mountains on Mars. There are approximately 22 thousand lakes in Putorana, which occupy 1/10 of the plateau’s relief. There are so many long and deep lakes nowhere else in the world. This is where Lake Vivi is located — the geographical center of Russia. The highest waterfall in Russia is also located here. The height of the free fall of the Kandinsky Falls is 108 meters.
Since 2010, Putorana has been included in the UNESCO heritage list.
