The main attraction of Ruskeala is a flooded quarry. The water in the reservoir is emerald, and the rocks around are multi-colored. Since the 17th century, marble was mined here, which was later used to build the Winter Palace, Kazan and St. Isaac’s Cathedrals. This is a man-made "bowl" in a solid mass of marble, cut through a system of shafts, adits and drifts. There is nothing else like it in Europe. Marble mining stopped in the 1990s, and since 2005 there has been a tourist park here. Ruskeala is famous for its excellent acoustics. The shimmer of colored lanterns resembles the northern lights.
