Xuankong Si Monastery is located on the northeastern slopes of Mount Hongshan in Shanxi Province, China. This unique Buddhist monastery is also known as the "Vis Hanging Monastery" due to its location at an altitude of 75 meters above the ground, built into the cliffs.
The monastery was founded more than 1,500 years ago, during the Northern Wei Dynasty, and it is an outstanding example of architecture that harmoniously combines Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian elements. This makes it unique not only from an architectural point of view, but also in the context of Chinese philosophy.
The construction of the monastery is distinguished by its engineering complexity: the buildings are supported on wooden beams, which gives them stability and allows them to withstand various climatic conditions. The monastery includes more than 40 different halls and rooms, which are connected by narrow passages and stairs.
Xuankong Si is also known for its impressive statues of Buddhas, Taoists, and Confucian saints, as well as various relics related to these traditions.
Visitors to the monastery can enjoy not only its spiritual atmosphere, but also the picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and tunnels. The Xuankong Si Monastery is an important part of China’s cultural heritage and attracts tourists, researchers and pilgrims from all over the world.
